When sport (dis)orients young graduates
Project promoters : Magali Danner, Carine Érard, Christine Guégnard
Research engineer : Julien Berthaud
Supported by the Institut National de la Jeunesse et de l’Éducation Populaire (INJEP), this research is a further contribution to a better understanding of the transition from high school to higher education, and particularly of vocational baccalaureates, in the continuity of the work undertaken over the last four years at the IREDU (Danner, Guégnard, 2015; Danner, Érard, Guégnard, 2016). The project focuses on atypical groups such as non-general baccalaureate holders who are not well prepared for university (and long studies), or young girls venturing into male-dominated courses. Beyond a reflection on the reasons and logic of studies, the aim is to study the risks perceived by young people who thwart the statistical probabilities in terms of orientation.
The analysis of the aspirations of students in vocational high schools in the Bourgogne Franche-Comté region makes it possible to identify the determinants of an orientation based on a taste for sport, and to apprehend the anteriority of projects to pursue ‘risky’ higher education studies such as university. In this respect, the STAPS programme is a favourable field of study since these students often have a history of personal involvement in the world of sport and share a taste for sport. This research underlines the diversity of secondary school career paths and allows us to understand the plural relationships of professional baccalaureate students to higher education.
