Thesis Title: the role of teaching practices in the development of non-academic competencies and their effects on the success of first-degree students
Thesis abstract :
The objective of our research is to contribute to the clarification of the differences of success between students in elementary school. To do this, we explore students’ development of “non-academic” skills (in the sense that they are not just the result of academic knowledge: Stasz and Brewer, 1999, Duru-Bellat, 2016).
Six non-academic skills are retained in our research: cooperation, empathy, self-control, anxiety, self-esteem and internality. Given the importance of the effect of teaching practices on the student’s school career (Bressoux, 1994, 2001, Hanushek, 2002, 2014), we hypothesize that (1) the characteristics of first-degree teachers relate to the level of development of non-academic skills and that (2) the development of non-academic skills related to teacher characteristics has an effect on the academic success of elementary school students through mediating variables like well-being. Our sample consists of 623 CE2, CM1 and CM2 students and 26 teachers. The research protocol collected (1) data on the subjective characteristics of teachers based on student perception and data on the objective characteristics of teachers, (2) data at the beginning and end of the year on students ‘non-academic skills; and (3) data on students’ academic competencies in French and mathematics, supplemented by an indication of the student’s level based on the teacher’s judgment.
Our research therefore aims to evaluate both (1) the characteristics of teachers who are related to the level of development of non-academic competences and (2) the effect of these on the inequalities of student success.
